Asus Eee PC 4G (white) Laptop

Price range: $299.99  -  $369.99

Specs: Intel Celeron M (630 MHz), 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM, 2 lbs, 7 in TFT active matrix, Linux
Review Source: CNET.com
Editor's rating: 7.5
Good: Small, light, and inexpensive; solid-state hard drive is fast and efficient; well-thought-out preinstalled software package.
Bad: Cramped keyboard; very little hard drive space; low screen resolution.
Bottom line: For less than $400, the Asus Eee PC 4G offers an impressive package for portable Web surfing and basic productivity, as long as you keep expectations tempered. The incredibly approachable price outweighs any shortcomings; it's a near perfect choice for a highly portable second or backup laptop.

I bought a Asus Eee PC I ABSOLUTELY HATED IT! Sometimes it would freeze and the screen would break up when you restart it. The screen would break up and go black out of nowhere. I couldn't check my yahoo email because yahoo would say something weird. And sometimes it wouldn't even turn on, it hasn't been keeping charge...so I went to best buy returned it after 9 months of dealing with the crap and now I am buying an emachine. Also the linux sucks I can't stand it, I will never ever get something with linux. I will never by a Asus again, they are a waste of money. They said it had a defect which it probably did, but when it did work it I didn't like it. I could never recommend this to anyone. Spend your money more wisely. Emachines are 299 at bestbuy and they work like a 600 dollar laptop. I would be lying if I said I liked this laptop one bit.

by Mahonex - November 8, 2008
Pros: Lightweight, easy to transport. Good battery life, pretty easy setup even for a Linux novice. Very powerful for the size.
Cons: Like many before me, the keyboard is cramped, but I'm getting used to this. The larger screen on the newer models will overcome the cramped page look and scrolling necessary when web-browsing.

This has a tremendous functionality for such a small box. Really, many high schoolers or even basic college students could use this with ease and get a lot accomplished. If all you do is go to the coffee shop, surf the web and check e-mail, than really, what else do you need.

Pros: great battery life; great size; cheap price
Cons: No storage. Keyboard is dicey. First time Linux user; quick boot up and shutdown, but the Asus version of the OS has junk on it that you can't uninstall to free up limited hard drive space. Wireless connected automatically about half the time.

I bought a 2G.

For the price it is 1st class. Ideal for kids as a fist computer but also ideal for office bods who basically to typing and email.

Steve Jobs Mr Gates should be very very nervous.

2 minute boot time, does not crash and does not weigh 3Kg. And if it gets nicked only $400 to replace it.

I am seriously considering going over to Linux on all my machines.

This is the next Commodore 64.

900,000 were sold in France last year...

The EEE PC from Asus must be the most significant step forward in computing for a long time. For a frequent flyer like myslef it is undeniably one of the best things I have ever purchased and goes well with my Blackberry Curve and Ipod classic. I have upgraded the memory to 2 gig and have added a 16 gig sd card which is great for watching DVD's on the plane. I may well upgrade to XP to enable eme to install a couple of important windows programmes that I use. All-in-all, a magnificent product.

Summary: Simplicity is its triumph.
by Diogo Cysne - June 27, 2008
Pros: Excellent mobility and very good Internet connection. It's perfect to daily tasks, like typing.
Cons: The small SSD space (4GB).

User Rating

8 out of 10
This small notebook is not following the market tendencies, where the notebooks must be as powerful as desktops. The simplicity of EeePC, as its low cost, makes it one of the most sucessful computers of 2008 until now. I simply loved creating documents with the good "OpenOffice" and accessing the Internet with a so portable computer. Of course, it will never substitute the "strong" notebooks, but it's perfect for daily tasks, being better than "palmtops" (do they still in market?) or "smartphones".

There is no problem with the processor and the screen resolution, a despite of being low, fits well in the 7 inches screen.
But the SSD space could be better. I am not a guy who fills the computers with endless movies, but 4GB is simply... to small.

Pros: Light weight, solid, conversation-starter
Cons: Small Screen makes you bug-eyed.

I've had the 2-gig turquoise version for about 5 months. I bought it new via Amazon for about $326. I am impressed with the solid state drive assuming it is shock resistant. I've had no problems with it in that regard. However, it is too hard to type on for anything serious. I plug in my iMac keyboard and it works just fine and complements that I also use this keyboard at home. As I said, its greatest liability is the screen. I put the computer to the side and take lecture notes, seldom looking at the screen. I bought it to take lecture notes and not to be too heavy, since my gym bag, containing law books, etc. is already too heavy. I've also noticed that in my gym bag it is not as bullet proof as I would like. Even in a padded case, I've noticed that the screen is sensitive and may break given a few more adventures. I also take it to work thinking that I would take statements, but it needs a larger keyboard to do that. I've not as yet decided to invest in the smaller Apple keyboard, so in a sense it becomes complicated/expensive. I've also found that at just a few coffee houses or other locations am I able to get free wireless, and connecting takes awhile, so that's been less enticing. I think if I had to do it again, I would simply go with the $1000 Apple laptop. I am finding that once I get out of school, I'll need a Microsoft PC given use by law firms. I will probably buy a Dell PC since that is the laptop used at the last law firm I visited.

The EEE PC may not be for everyone, but if you want something north of a smart phone and south of a full sized laptop, you can't get much better.

I enjoyed the Xandros OS, but it was a little too limiting for what I needed, so I took the plunge and installed Windows XP on it. XP really shines on this machine. It boots up in about 17 seconds, and is very responsive.

Browsing in Firefox 2.x and IE7 is smooth (FF is my default but I had to TRY IE7). With full screen mode, and a couple of FF addons to maximize space, it's a very good browser.

For media, it handles audio with no problem, and although WMP 11 is okay on it, VLC gives it better performance on larger bitrate video files.

Although Office 2003 ran okay on it, when I ported in my work PST, with over 1000 contacts, Outlook became kind of sluggish. The other Office apps worked fine for me, though I would imagine authoring a PowerPoint presentation would be a pain.

I've never been a fan of trackpads (I love the IBM pointer - yeah I'm one of those), but I find the EEE's to work really well. My only complaint being that the bevel on the scrolling edges could have been a little more ergonomic.

I was worried about typing on the EEE, but despite the cramped quarters and my somewhat meaty hands, I manage to get 45-50 WPM, compared to about 75-80 WPM on my desktop.

My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have a 1024 wide screen, as many sites are designed for this, but in the real world, may sites put their ads to the right side, so it's rare I need to scroll horizontally (which the track pad easily accomodates).

I should point out that in the months since the EEE first came out, a really great user community has sprouted up, so if you're into tweaking (software or hardware), the EEE may be the coolest tweaker's toy to come out in a decade.

There is so much being done, from custom video drivers to simulate larger screen resolutions and running games that have no right to run on it based on the specs, to people cramming any combination of a touchscreen, internal bluetooth, 16GB internal storage expansion, GPS and 802.11 N and/or 3G data networking all into a single EEE, without spoiling the looks of it. Just don't expect the full battery life.

On a final note, I have to disagree with the video review, because I've busted my black 4G EEE out in a few coffee shops and restaurants, and it invariably invites people to ask about it.

I purchased my eeepc about three weeks ago to serve as a easy portable laptop. I wanted to be able to check email, write documents, surf the web and generally maintain productivity while on the road.
I had the opportunity to play with the eeepc at Micro Center where they have them on display. After playing with the keyboard I decided that it would take some getting used to, but was generally usable. Since then I have used the eeepc daily for a variety of task and have learned to type well on it.
I have written a variety of documents and emails on it and have found it to be a great companion for getting things done while on the go.

Summary: Your on-the-go laptop
by karlojey - March 9, 2008
Pros: Lightweight, functional and easy to use.
Cons: Small storage space.

User Rating

9 out of 10
I just got my eee PC today and so far I'm loving it.

I agree with most of the reviews here: It definitely won't replace your laptop that you spent so much money on for its performance. But if your needs are pretty basic then this little thing won't hurt you much.

I myself own a 14" laptop that I use for work. I don't really mind lugging it around to and from work, but carrying it on long trips is a problem. That's where my eee PC comes in. Because of its portability and functionality, it basicly answers my needs when I'm on the road. The OpenOffice app built in to it isn't really that difficult to use since it's similar to oh-so-familiar MS Word. Setting up a wireless connection is easy as well so I can be online almost instantly when I'm in any WiFi hotspot. My only rant about this is the limited storage. It packs around 4GB but only 1.3GB is left for you to use. This is easily compensated by bringing along my USB flash drive. I also use it to watch videos and play music, which to my surprise sounds good on the small speakers.

Bottomline is: This isn't going to replace the high end laptops that most of us use for work (or for play). But if you're looking for a laptop that can bring along while on the road that could answer your most basic computing needs, then this is the thing for you. You can't really go wrong with this as long as you're familiar with its limitations.

A great value mini laptop that is good for on the road use, without breaking your back or wallet. Great apps and smooth internet experience with word and excel compatibility. New users or kids will not know the difference from Windows. Definately, more stable and faster than Windows, in a neat package. The new eeePC with larger screen and more storage will be a better seller. SD card expansion is better as we can swap the data files between regular Windows laptop or PC and this one. I use a 8GB SD card as a data card, with seemless transfers between my laptop, desktop and eeePC.

This is a fantastic machine for people on the move. I had to change to Windows XP just to be able to use my corporate VPN. The VPN client that comes with the Linus version is buggy and does not work.

There is NO support from Asus on this, however, the EEEPC forum is where all the support is and it is really great.

All in all, I am really happy, installed and tweaked the XP and use only OUTLOOK (from MS Office) and the OpenOffice suite for all my work on the road. Great piece of sturdy ultra portable.

Cons: The next generation is due to be released soon

User Rating

OK, so that doesn't sound like a con... except for those of us that JUST bought this little beauty.

I have found an incredible array of support sites with how-to's for this little machine, and as yet, have not had to call ASUS for anything. Everything I have come across, where I think to myself, "Gee, I wish I had <insert shortcut/feature> available on my Eee PC", someone else has already published a how to.

Don't like the pop-ups when you plug in a device? Here' how to turn it off.

Wish you could modify the tabs in Easy Mode? The answer is just a click away.

This is about the best, least frustrating computer experience I have ever had. Just about every complaint I have seen from other users has a fix if you look for it.

Recommended for anyone who has ever gotten a backache lugging a "laptop" home from work.

Pros: Good price, fast and light
Cons: Small keys, touchpad is hard to use

User Rating

I just wanted something for couch surfing, and this little machine perfectly meets my needs. I love the built in webcam too. But, I have to cut my nails to use the small keys, and some of the keys don't strike on the first touch. I also had to buy an external mouse because I found the touch pad hard to use, especially when you have to scroll sideways and up and down so much. Trust me, the external mouse makes all the difference.

Even still, I love this little machine! It is so light and compact, I want to take it everywhere with me. What really made me appreciate the machine was when I saw the prices of the other ultraportables at Best Buy - $900 and up. I've only had mine for 3 days, but so far I love it. I ordered mine at RedBarn on a Friday night, and received it Thursday.

Summary: Nice Little Laptop
by Greg L Thompson - February 28, 2008
Pros: Lightweight, Portable, Fast, Long Battery Life
Cons: Small Keyboard.

User Rating

9 out of 10
This is a nice sized little unit. When I wanted to purchase this Laptop I was looking for something bigger than a palm pad, but smaller than a regular sized laptop.

You can take this little guy anywhere you want to perform work, play games, and not worry about loseing, or having it stolen from you. At the price, its perfect. Plus its nice to not have to carry around a full sized laptop that requires all the accessories and cables... My battery life has lasted up to 3 hours.

I purchased the base unit and then added my own memory (1GIG) and an additional disk space with the included SD card slot. I added an additional (16GIG) SDHD card that is supported by this system.

Then I used an old copy of Windows XP Home that was not used on any of my systems and upgraded it to Home with SP2.

Now this computer boots up in 15 seconds to Windows XP Home and I can connect to my home network, internet and do anything that I need.

Summary: that's what I needed for travel
by sbars - February 19, 2008
Pros: Normal small laptop
Cons: Seems no at all for me

User Rating

Small, normal performance, full keyboard (not full size but it's ok for such a small device).
I use installed Linux and it fits all my needs when I travel - Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin. See photos, listen music, edit some urgent documents ... whatever you want.
Just small improvements and I've got full KDE environment. Insert 16Gb SD card and that will be ok, and lightweight ... despite of laptops with real hard drives... even the smallest hard drives.
My brother has installed Windows XP on his Asus eeePC and it works pretty well.
I didn't want to carry my laptop during my travels (because it's full size 15,4" laptop and it's havier) and 12" laptops are more expensive. So eeePC is exactly what I want - cheap and able to do what I need on the road in both Linux and Windows .

Yes, it would be hard to use Photoshop on it ... but I would say it's rather mobile device for mobile needs than graphic studio.

P.S. Ah! My dad wants same on his birthday :) He says it would be ideal for GPS - large enough and lightweight enough.

Bravo to ASUS.

Advanced users will want to go to www.eeeuser.com to learn how to hack the eee into a fully functional linux pc. For example, I installed the latest version of java and my work productivity software. Keeping in mind the limits of linux and the hardware specs (ie plugging in peripherals like ipods at your own risk), it an excellent machine.

The pros are easy: Very light weight - excellent build quality - and a very decent spec.

The cons are what you might expect: The keyboard is rather cramped - making typing a bit difficult (although I suspect you would get used to the size after some time with the unit), and the location of some keys, specifically the page up / page down / shift buttons. Again - one could get adjusted to this over time -- but how much time?

The other con is the screen -- while bright, it's resolution of 800 x 480 just doesn't provide enough 'viewing space' for me. The forthcoming 8.9" (or larger) screen may address this issue -- we'll see sometime in 2008.

If you're interested in checking the Eee out, purchasing from Costco will give you more than ample time to do so (90 days).

Overall, depending upon your requirements, the Eee might be the perfect super-subnotebook available....
