Good:
Updated CPUs, improved battery life, adds touch pad gestures from the MacBook Air.
Bad:
Small performance premium over the cheaper 13-inch MacBook; only 90 days of toll-free technical support; still no SD card reader.
Bottom line:
A solid, if predictable, upgrade to the MacBook Pro line, but noteworthy for stealing the MacBook Air's best feature--expanded gesture controls for the touch pad.

Summary: I have been a PC user all my life... by compstuft - November 15, 2008 Pros: The Macbook Pro is easy to use, has great battery life, and the tactile touchpad is very convenient. Cons: It does not have a memory slot, and that is all that I can think of for now. |

I have been using a PC all my life, and I needed a laptop for college; I just needed something I could surf the web with, use a word processor on, and use photoshop, illustrator and dreamweaver on. The Macbook not only has a beautiful, sleek design, but the GUI is very attractive and easy to use. It took my about an hour to figure everything out. I like how I can just "drag" an application to the trash can and it's gone. Unlike Windows where one application has a folder on the main disk drive, then inside the folders there are more folders, than inside those there are more and, sometimes uninstalling something does not necessarily mean that there are not folders still in the computer somewhere. With the Mac OSX, an application is still made up of many files, but they are "compressed" into a single icon (most of the time). If an application has more than one file lying around, I can just easily do a search and delete.
Compared to the ASUS G1S I was using before, the battery life on the Macbook Pro is truly amazing. On average, I get about 4 hours on here.
I'm glad I bought a Macbook Pro and I love it.
Note: I will still be using the PC extensively in the future; PC rocks!

Summary: Powerful, Intuition, Sex Appeal, Innovative by soulchild375 - September 27, 2008 Pros: thin and fairly lightweight, keyboard and media outlets make for no clutter, loud speakers, larger trackpad than before, sexy aluminum finish everywhere, clear and sharp displays, OS X Leopard is TOO easy to learn and use (easier than Vista) Cons: would like to have seen at least an additional USB Port, limited initial coverage (purchase of 3-year warranty a must), battery can get very warm |

This is only my second generation of an Apple computer. I finally upgraded from my first computer which was the iBook G4 1.42 Ghz PowerPC at 14.1 inches. This is a very welcome upgrade and I have not been disappointed at all since upgrading.
The keyboard is very ergonomic. All of the media options that have their own sections on other PC Laptops come integrated into the F-row keys of the keyboard, requiring only the simple press of a button to operate (no shortcuts necessary). I chose a Matte over Glossy display because I only require simple multimedia use. Either way, this display is bright, crystal clear, and very sharp. Keys on the keyboard are large enough for big fingers, stress-less to press, and relatively quiet. The laptop itself is only several pounds in weight and is about the size of your average college textbook, yet is only one inch thin all the way around. As a doctoral student I carry it around quite often and can easily fit in my backpack . The exteriors of these high-level laptops are also made entirely of durable aluminum (not plastic), given their surface a very smooth, satisfying, and classy feel to them.
Only thing I personally felt apple could have probably done to make this machine even better was to add an additional USB port. Only having 2 USB ports makes it picky when I choose to hook up my peripheral devices.
Overall, this machine left this user extremely impressed with just about every expectation met. It is a much more costly machine, but the quality and support you get for what you pay will not leave you feeling ripped off - very much worth it!

The Nvidia8600 chip appears to be failing, the cpu loose something and youll have no more than a "Black Screen Of Death". Many MBP are failing every day and the way to fix them are changing the logic boards.
Also, the displays for this computeres have (often) particles inside the screen and flurry areas.
Other physical problems may occur. Battery expossion may occur.
Goog some and find the macbook pro problems.
Im a Mac Fan but this is important!

Summary: Simply Wonderful by jmcalli - September 12, 2008 Pros: Beautiful display. Durable shell. Rock solid performance from both the hardware and OS X Leopard. Runs over 4 hours on a charged battery. Excellent speakers. Cons: A minor learning curve for me with OS X and the Apple keyboard (I'm a former Thinkpad/Windows user). |
User Rating![]() 10 out of 10 |
A beautifully engineered laptop. After a month of using my MacBook Pro several hours a day, haven't had a single lockup or crash. I certainly don't miss the Windows XP crashes. I installed Office 2008 and have had no problems accessing my old Windows documents. Added a 1TB Time Capsule and now have transparent, automatic backup as well as ultra fast wireless. I highly recommend this laptop. If you are hesitant to cut the cord from Windows because you have applications that only run under Windows, you can run Windows on this computer using Boot Camp or installing it on a virtual drive.

Summary: Great desktop replacement by ryank82 - August 31, 2008 Pros: Dedicated graphics ,OSX, Led lcd, Great keyboard Cons: Can get expensive |
User Rating![]() 10 out of 10 |
The Macbook Pro is my only computer. It can handle anything I need it to do. The LED backlit lcd is a joy to look at. I have my wireless, webcam and mic built in. This makes it very easy for contacts online. Then there are the features that really make this laptop shine. Items such as backlit keyboard, magsafe power adapter, usb2,firewire 400+800, Gigabit ethernet, dedicated graphics. But the knockout punch comes from the operating system MAC OSX. No spyware , No Virus's, Good security. The same company that makes your hardware "Apple" makes the software as well. This makes integration as good as it gets.

Summary: The MacBook pro ROCKS!!!! by w01f - August 28, 2008 Pros: Aluminum case, Easy to use, Light for its size, has good battery life Cons: The Macbook Pro is pretty expensive compared to PC notebooks with the same specs. It also doesn't have a Blu-ray drive of an HD-DVD drive. |
User Rating![]() 9 out of 10 |
The Macbook Pro is an incredibly versatile laptop, it has a relatively large screen size at 15" but is also one of the lightest 15" notebooks out there. Leopard is a great operating system it rarely hangs if ever and is easy to use. The MBP's case is made of aluminum which is much sturdier than other plastic cased laptops. The Macbook Pro is also a relatively cool laptop and if it ever heats up beyond a certain point an internal fan will kick in an cool the system in minutes. The macbook pro is also compatible with draft N wifi.

Summary: My First Laptop by ossman - August 27, 2008 Pros: Apart from what Cnet has mentioned; Back lit keyboard Much better display than other peer laptops Dual boot capability Sleek design Cons: None besides the extend Warranty is whopping 250 bucks. |
User Rating![]() 9 out of 10 |
My First ever laptop and that's Apple.I sometimes can't believe that it was this easy to switch to Mac OS X since like most of us I was a long time Windows user. At first I thought I am buying an expensive machine but after using it for 3 months now, I do not regret for second for my decision.
I would highly recommend to anyone who want to spend more than 1500 for laptop even if you are a Window user. Dual Boot wil allow you to enjoy both operating systems.

As a an owner of previous versions of the Mac Book Pro, I am as pleased with this version as I was with the last.
My first Mac Book Pro was the first generation ever released by apple, i.e. the first with the Intel Chips, and it was an amazing machine for what it was, but inevitably as soon as I had mine, a new version came out with Core 2 duo processors and bigger hard drives, so it was always at the back of my mind that I would like to upgrade.
As I live in Ireland it would however be a very very expensive upgrade leaving me wondering if it was worth it so when I came to be in the states this past month I took the opportunity to save 800 euro and bought it there.
The machine itself left people who know me asking had I even changed my laptop as they look the exact same to the untrained eye but I can tell you, the main difference is definately under the hood.
The Intel Core 2 duo 2.4ghz is perfectly complemented by the standard 2gb of RAM and creates a world on the machine that would give the impression of an ability to do anything! The only thing this machine has struggled with, for me, is loading Microsoft Windows XP on VM-Ware while I am doing multiple things, and even then, the machine takes its time, loads the software, and once it is running, everything is back to normal (and this issue might be the fact that I have allocated 1gb of the computers RAM to the Windows run-time).
The graphics world flawlessly with the computer to present a very smooth sleek looking Mac OS 10.5 with no stutters or lagging of any kind, even with multiple applications open. And the included iLife software allows the user to use this machines graphics capabilities to their full extend, expert or not.
As i am quite the power user in terms of programming and general computer science programs, I can speak from experience when I say that this computer was designed with professionals in mind, from its included Xcode developing environment to its ability to have multiple IDE(interactive developing environments) open at the same time, and this creates a perfect developing environment that is a pleasure to use.
Mutli-touch is a great feature added by apple, but in my opinion it is not fully utilized as it could be. It has such potential that I am sure, in the future Apple will use. But for the moment, a program called multi-clutch has been brought to my attention which I have been using for 2 weeks now and I have not looked back, it gives the user the ability to add track pad gestures to any program with personalized functionality.
The new keyboard included with the Mac Book Pro, closely resembles ,in functionality, the new keyboards Apple now ship with their desktop PC's. It allows for music control without having to switch to itunes as well as LED back-light controls, keyboard Back-light controls, volume and Dashboard. Apple really got it right with this one.
Finally the wireless. In my older Mac Book Pro, I found the wireless to be good, but the range was quite limited, this of course due to the aluminum case. The wireless in the new Mac Book Pros however does not suffer from this problem, and I now enjoy wireless where I would not have been able to with my older Machine. Personally I cannot wait for the day when N becomes standard and I can laugh at the Dell followers who will not have either the range or speed.
All in all this is a brilliant machine and any problems I have found can and will probably be solved with software updates.
