Editor's rating:
8.0
Good:
First 18-inch display we've seen; true 16:9 aspect ratio; inventive media control panel mimics a remote control.
Bad:
Higher-end model is twice as much as lower-end version, despite minimal specification differences; minor Blu-ray control issues; we expected better bass from a system with a subwoofer.
Bottom line:
With Blu-ray and a true 1080p display, the 18-inch Acer Aspire 8920 is a movie fan's dream, but we'd go for the cheaper of Acers' two preconfigured models.

Summary: Aspire 8920G Acers Top of the Line PC by lovebaker - October 2, 2008 Pros: Great screen, good media controller, put together well, fast, sleek, and easy to use Cons: The biggest issue with the 8920G is that it supports two hard drives but does not have the capability to have them in a RAID array. For some reason they left it out of thier best unit. I was told maybe they could resolve it if I used pay support. |

I would have given this a top rating if they had actually taken the time to resolve the issue. The chipset supports raid the intel raid manager is on the system it seems that in a rush to get to market they just chose not to put it into the bios. Seems like a simple fix but all indications from ACER and thier horrid technical support that they do not see a need to make it compete with other top-line-units. Even Gateway who they now own has it in a comparable unit at a much lower price. This unit could have been the unit I chose for several other notebooks needed but more than likely will go with Dell or HP that have comparable units with out the CineDash but the ability to create a raid with two drives and true HD (1920 x 1080/1200) displays.

Summary: A good bang for the buck, but a warning to anyone else. by WolfCryi - July 29, 2008 Pros: Many features at a great price, NVidia Geforce 9500M GS, Cons: Issues with connecting an external monitor. |
User Rating![]() 4 out of 10 |
A warning to anyone considering this laptop, or any other of the Acer Aspire "Gemstone Blue" laptops, you may have problems connecting an external monitor(via the VGA port). I've been wrestling with this issue for a couple days now.
Other than this issue the laptop works just fine, but the poor external monitor support is disappointing. Had I known this before buying it, I would have seriously reconsidered.

Summary: Acer Nightmare by vanhila - June 29, 2008 Pros: Screen; Blu-Ray Cons: No Bluetooth!!!! |
User Rating![]() 2 out of 10 |
FALSE ADVERTISING!!! Another reviewer had the same problem here. I bought this unit ($1,500) based on the Acer website specs for the unit which includes, among other things, Bluetooth. Guess what? The website lied, there is no Bluetooth. I called and wrote Acer and all I got back was "we apologize for the inconvenience but we are not responsible for the information on our website" - ???!!!??
Are you kidding me? If we can't use the manufacturers own website to get accurate information about their products, where can we go? Even here on CNET they were given the false information. Bluetooth was a major reason I bought the unit. As I write this - one month after initially talking to Acer - the false information remains on their website!! Avoid Acer, they have ZERO customer accountability and now I'm stuck with this thing.

Summary: Great Computer/No Bluetooth by x10acn - May 30, 2008 Pros: Great Screen, good features. Cons: Heavy, Bluetooth omitted |
User Rating![]() 8 out of 10 |
Bought my 8920-6048 from Meijer.com. After reading the CNET review it seemed the best value since the stated differences from the more expensive model were processor and video card. No mention was made that Bluetooth was not included on this model. Acer lays all the responsibility for not communicating this on the retailer. It would have been an easy thing for them to put another piece of paper in with the documentation making it clear that even though the manual doesn't tell you Bluetooth is optional on some models this model comes without Bluetooth. Corporate responsibility seems to be nonexistent at Acer.

Summary: Great bang for the buck! by Ice4351 - May 28, 2008 Pros: Screen size 18.4 inches-1080 screen-built in webcam-built in fingerprint scanner-good sound for a laptop-blu ray drive Cons: It would be nice if they had a case for this monster and a built in TV tuner. |

Wow this thing is great for watching blu ray movies. It is much faster than my old HP laptop and the picture is unbelievable with a blu ray movie on the HD screen. It is the new kid on the block and has a vey interesting and unique look. I got it all for $974 plus tax from Meijer.com
