Good:
Beautiful, unique design; incredible battery life, thanks to its 12-cell battery; comfortable keyboard; touchpad on/off button; touch-sensitive media controls; dual headphone jacks.
Bad:
Battery adds significant weight; speakers produce treble sound.
Bottom line:
The HP Pavilion dv6985se is a well-stocked mainstream machine with a long-living (though heavy) 12-cell battery. We recommend it, provided you like the unique copper-colored case and are willing to schlep around 6.6 pounds of laptop.

Summary: Excellent computer. by cairoperry - November 3, 2008 Pros: Appearance, display, battery life, HDD, Memory, $$. Cons: Only thing that comes close is only having 3 USB ports. |

I've had it one month now. It's taken a bit to remove all the freebie stuff. Bought a good registry cleaner (64bit) another copy of Office (cheaper)and changed all the displays to "classic", and it is working fine. The mouse pad is so easy to use, I'm just now getting a wireless mouse.

Summary: I love the labtop, it was/ is a great investment! by arvella11 - September 23, 2008 Pros: The color is awesome. The keypad is very stylish and it glides very smooth. The battery is a little bulky, but it is the largest battery and has the longest battery life. Most labtops come with a six cell battery and can't be upgraded to this one. Cons: The monitor is nice. I really like the blue colors on the screen when you turn it on. I don't have any things bad to say about this product for the money it is an investment. A friend of mine has a 2gig dell and it is of no comparison to this. |

When you are looking for a labtop to buy. You need to consider a few vital things. memory for one. You don't want to buy a labtop with two gigs on it. This one has four and that is the maximum! Reputation. Price and reliability. I believe if you do your homework well you will find for the memory, sleek look, and hp's quality. You have really outdone yourself. Do all of your research before you purchase anything.

Summary: Operating system needed restoration first week of use by mkeybr - September 18, 2008 Pros: The long life of the battery is about the only thing this dud in wolf's cloting has to offer. Cons: Where should I start? Vista 64 bit prevents use of CiscoVPN. The wireless network adapter is incompatible with my workplace network. It took hours to get my home DSL line functioning on this computer. Mouse skips all over the place, multiple GPFs. .. |

The dv6985se computer is unreliable. Don't be fooled by its "special edition" moniker. My primary need is for internet access because I teach online. Traveling with it 2-3 weeks ago, I was unable to access airport wireless networks 50% of the time. I am sitting here at my workplace, trying to access the wireless network for the past 4 hours without success. My IT and tech folks haven't a clue what the problem is. It works just fine on out 6 year old Dell laptops!
Video codecs are missing, and have to be reinstalled everytime I restart the computer if I am trying to view a downloaded video. Install drivers are missing, so half the time, programs I want to install fail to install at all. The troubleshooting screens are the worst I have ever seen from Microsoft. Windows 3.1 had better functionality!
While half the problem lies with Microsoft Vista, the other half lies with HP. The adapters have poor functionality, the speakers are very "tinny" as someone else noted, the machine just stops working periodically- the screen goes black, it shuts down and then restarts, with the subseqent message that "Windows is recovering from an unexpected shutdown," no doubt from a short in the motherboard!
I am disappointed the CNET would rate this laptop so highly as that is what prompted me to make the purchase in the first place. It is a lemon- Don't make the same mistake!
Updated on Oct 20, 2008Update: 6 weeks post purchase- crash of hard drive, unable to recover. Finally had to reformat the hard drive. Useless $800 piece of junk. Will never buy HP again (and will never take advice from CNET re technology purchases)!

Summary: I wish I would have bought a different laptop by nolean23 - September 9, 2008 Pros: inexpensive for what you get Cons: No doubt about it...HP released a machine that is defective. The most basic feature doesn't work. The touch volume control does not work. That's like buying a new TV and having to find an alternate way to change the channel. |

Summary: Great computer, when it work... by leifnv - September 4, 2008 Pros: Great compputers, when they work. However they have a lot of issues, ranging from mechanical failre (hinges) to total motherboard failure Cons: Unreliable and probably not tested out before released to the market. |

I have a 18 month old DV 9000 that I recieved as replacement after the hinges on my DV 8000 broke.
The fact of my case is that HP laptops in the serie range of DV 6000 to DV 9000 with AMD motherboards have extended warranty due to motherboard failure, however despite the fact that a lot of users having the same issues with Intel based motherboards have similar problems HP have no intention of extending the warranty on these laptops.
My Laptop is a HP DV 9023 with Intel Centrino Dual Core processor.
In my email exchange and phone conversations with HP I have recieved a variety of explanations and suggestions, I actually even had one "Case Manager" telling me my laptop was coverd under the extended warranty, but it is impossible to get an intelligent conversation when you are assigned a new "Case Manager" in each conversation or email (even when each of the casemanagers promise that they will handle my case until solved).
I am done with HP, unless they get the issue solved fast, I find it intolerable that a laptop costing close to $2000 should fail totally after 18 months.
It is also kinda funny that my daughters laptop, brand name Ewerex (a WalMart brand) and that costed a fraction is more reliable, run smoother and have a more efficient and personal support than a "quality" brand as HP

Summary: Tremendous computer by c9rxha - September 4, 2008 Pros: 4GB Ram, 250 GB Hard Drive, 2GHZ Dual Processor, Battery lasts for ever and only cost $749 on sale at Best Buy. Keys are good size, no fat finger problems. Cons: I hesitate to even mention this but the only con is what others have reported as well and that's the volume slide. It does hesitate on occasion but believe me, it's very very minor |
User Rating![]() 10 out of 10 |
The bottom line is that this is probably the most powerful computer you can get for the money. My son uses Flight Simulator on it and it's tremendous. Not that color would have stopped me from purchasing this computer but it's far better looking than what you see online. Best Buy said it's being dis-continued so if your looking for a powerfuld computer at a very attractive price, definitely put this laptop on your list.

Summary: I'm not impressed by SuperKellyK - September 2, 2008 Pros: The design is sleek. The keyboard is big and easy to use. Awesome wide screen. Cons: It's slower than I expected. The hard disk is very loud and cranky. The battery is big and bulky. Freezes up frequently. |

I was so excited to buy this computer after reading all the wonderful reviews. I don't get it...why does everyone think this is such a great machine?
The hard drive sounds like it needs oil when starting up. It sounds clunkier than any drive I've ever heard, to the point that I get worried every time I turn it on. \
I expected the battery to be big, but it's beyond bulky.
I couldn't install certain software because it needed a file from my Vista disk, yet the Vista disks didn't come with the machine.
My old computer was 5 years old and still faster than this one. Using this machine makes me wonder if I actually needed to buy a new computer. Maybe my expectations were too high.
Updated on Sep 4, 2008This is an update from the original poster. Don't be fooled by these reviews saying the volume control has "issues". There are no issues....it's a non-functional feature. It's defective. Another testimony of saving your files frequently. You will lose everything if you haven't saved your files once you hit that volume button.

Summary: Pretty Good by amerikanerin - August 25, 2008 Pros: Battery life, look, keyboard Cons: Graphics (?) |

I returned an HP yesterday to Best Buy that I had just bought because the my pictures screensaver cycled through in a choppy way. This computer does the same thing. i don't know if it's an HP issue (I had a 4-year old Dell that worked fine) or what... but I also hope to do video editing and am afraid that the problem might happen elsewhere as well.

Summary: GREAT BUY, GREAT PRICE by nerdytiff23 - August 20, 2008 Pros: Super Fast, cool features, you want it-its go it Cons: maybe a smidge heavy for some |
User Rating![]() 9 out of 10 |
I bought this laptop maybe a month ago, and am VERY please with it. It is a great buy and has all the bells and whistles you could want. 4GB, 64Bit. Need I say more. I mean, I'm not SUPER laptob savvy and up on all the hottest stuff, but this one has everything you could need. Prime example.....IT COMES WITH A FREAKIN REMOTE CONTROL. Yeah, I said it...remote. I was like WHAT?!?!?! Are you kidding me?! How freakin cool is that. Maybe its because I stepped up from an older Gateway that I've had since '06, but gosh, this thing keeps blowing my mind.
Lightening fast, great color and design, and keyboard makes everything so super quick to get to that you can get spoiled very quickly. There is a switch on the lower left side so you can turn the internet on and off. Be careful not to rub against that switch and push it to the side when its on your lap or you'll get disco'd from the net. I've never had that happen though, but I read about it before purchasing, so it may help someone out there reading this.
It may be JUST A SMIDGE heavy for, but then again, I don't carry it around much, but when I do, I don't think its any heavier than my standard pocketbook, so I don't notice it.
I know you will enjoy!

Summary: HP Pavillion dv6985se by yreebm1 - August 11, 2008 Pros: Sleek, fast, fun to use, user freindly. Cons: DVD slot, additional and unneeded applications, booted off internet for no reason (my fault?) |

I was recently out on a business trip when my older Sony Vaio took a dump. I had the laptop in for repairs yet, no luck getting to the root cause of my problem, enter the HP.
First looks were impressive. This laptop stood out in the crowd at Best Buy and I had to take a closer look at all it's features, and features it had. Being loyal to Sony for a long time, change was inevidable.
I want go into detail on what the HP had, you'll have to look here at CNET. But I can say whether in the hotel, or at home the system started up every time perfectly. Not much noise wiht the fan running, in fact a lot less then the Sony 747 I once had.
The DVD slot opening when I never pushed the side button is enough to send me to the moon. I will take it in for this issue since it's covered.
I think the screen is good, and reading some of the reviews thought it would be as good as my LCD/Plasma in the house, again, it is good.
The finger scoll on the laptop takes some getting use to. I'm sure that'll come with time. It's a bit more sensitive then the Sony.
For some reason I get booted off theinternet for no apparent reason, this may have to do with my settings, we'll see.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and if you're someone who travels or someone that needs a desktop replacement, go ahead and check this baby out!
